World of Warcraft: Forever Beta Launch Crashes Servers, Developers Express Surprise at Popularity

Players have shown massive interest in the beta test.

Blizzard Entertainment recently introduced World of Warcraft: Forever. The full release is scheduled for November 4, 2026, while players currently have the opportunity to evaluate the project during a beta test.

The launch of the World of Warcraft: Forever beta was accompanied by technical issues, as servers could not handle the influx of users wanting to try out the new way to play the MMORPG.

Senior game designer Josh Greenfield admitted that he is seeing player activity metrics of this scale for the first time in many years:

Guys, it was hard to fall asleep yesterday—I was so excited. The beta has been… insane. The craziest numbers I’ve seen in 17 years at Blizzard and almost 8 years on Classic. We genuinely have something truly special here.

Senior producer Tom Ellis explained that the test beta environment differs from the final version, and the beta is “very, very, very, very, very, very far away” from it. According to Tom, beta tests do not normally experience such a surge of players, and the system was not designed for this level of load.

World of Warcraft: Forever is positioned as “an opportunity to take the first steps into a legendary world full of unexplored lands, warring factions, untold dangers, and unseen secrets.” The game world will remain “in the first era of WoW,” but it will expand and receive new adventures.
