“We were real weirdos”: Nier series creator opens up about the old and new industry

Yoko Taro, the enigmatic visionary behind the NieR franchise, recently shared his candid reflections on the evolution of game development. He observed that his generation of creators was largely composed of genuine eccentricities.

According to the Japanese auteur, this phenomenon is rooted in the fact that during his formative years, gaming was a fringe hobby rather than a mainstream cultural staple. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, the industry primarily attracted individuals seeking an alternative to the rigid constraints of traditional career paths. Taro identifies himself as part of this insular group of “social outcasts” who found their sanctuary in the digital realm.

The landscape has since undergone a radical transformation. Modern developers have matured in a world where gaming is a respected, lucrative, and ubiquitous business. This shift has naturally drawn a different demographic into the workforce.

The creator of NieR: Automata pointed out that the current generation of designers is significantly more “normal” and socially well-integrated. While he acknowledges that the industry has achieved a higher level of professionalism, many veterans still look back at the chaotic, unbridled days of the past with a sense of nostalgia.
