Paradox Testing Modern Processor Support to Improve Hearts of Iron IV Performance

The developers have decided to focus on the technical state of the game.

Pdxen, a technical lead from the Hearts of Iron IV grand strategy team, recently reached out to the community to announce an open beta test for an update. The patch contains no balance changes and focuses purely on technical improvements.

The developer explained that many years have passed since the release of Hearts of Iron IV in 2016, and the processors inside players’ PCs have changed. Paradox Interactive decided to ensure support for modern CPU models by updating the multithreading libraries, which should have a positive impact on HOI IV performance:

Back then, new processors typically had 4 cores and about 8 hardware threads, and all of these cores were heterogeneous. Today, almost all processors except the most budget-friendly ones have more cores and hardware threads, and these cores are no longer necessarily homogeneous. In this patch, we are updating the multithreading libraries used in HoI4 with the goal of improving performance on certain machines.

The Hearts of Iron IV developers are currently inviting fans to take part in the testing. Players can do this through the game properties in Steam under the betas tab by selecting the version named “open_beta”:

Given the fundamental nature of this update and the vast variety of configurations players use to run the game, we would appreciate your help in verifying that no unforeseen performance degradation occurs for specific hardware configurations before we release these changes to all players.
