“We definitely won’t make the game like Larian”: CDPR director on Baldur’s Gate 3 and their preferred approach to work
Larian Studios’ example can be inspiring, but reproducing it isn’t straightforward
The full release of the role-playing game Baldur’s Gate 3 proved to be a major success. Several industry figures have looked to Larian Studios’ work and taken away practical lessons.
Recently, CD Projekt Red co-director Michał Nowakowski told PC Gamer that Baldur’s Gate 3 has been a source of inspiration, but they do not intend to simply copy Larian’s formula:
Baldur’s Gate 3 has certainly inspired us, but we’re still committed to the direction established by The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk — large, open worlds. We don’t want to produce another game in the same mould with only improved visuals. Our goal is to introduce new ideas.
Nowakowski didn’t go into detail about how they’ll achieve this, but he made clear that their new project won’t resemble Divinity or Baldur’s Gate 3:
We’re not going to make a game the way Larian does — that’s their strength. Still, many aspects of how they enable interaction with the world have unquestionably influenced us.
