Variety has unveiled projected financial losses for the comic book adaptation “Supergirl.” According to the report, Warner Bros. and DC Studios are expected to face a deficit ranging between $100 million and $120 million.
The film was produced on a budget of $170 million, with an additional $120 million allocated for marketing efforts. Following its opening weekend, the movie fell significantly short of expectations; domestic box office receipts in North America reached $38 million, while international markets contributed a modest $30 million.
Despite the lackluster debut, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran maintains that the film’s performance is not representative of the studio’s overarching slate.
“While ‘Supergirl’ did not meet our box office projections, it represents just one element of DC Studios’ broader, long-term strategy, in which we remain entirely confident,”
Safran stated in an official press release. Analysts suggest the film would need to gross between $300 million and $375 million to break even. Industry experts attribute the underperformance to growing audience fatigue regarding traditional superhero tropes, coupled with the choice of a lesser-known protagonist portrayed by “House of the Dragon” star Milly Alcock.
Critics offered a lukewarm reception, with the film currently holding a 54% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Craig Gillespie (“Cruella”), the cast also features Jason Momoa and Matthias Schoenaerts. The narrative focuses on the exploits of Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman.
This marks another setback for Warner Bros. this year, following the underwhelming performance of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride,” which incurred a $90 million production budget but earned only $23 million at the box office.
