Voice Actor for ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ Reveals His Inspiration for Logan

Actor Liam McIntyre had a wealth of iconic source material to pull from when shaping his iteration of Wolverine. Across decades of cinema, Hugh Jackman defined Logan through a rugged, visceral lens, while legendary voice actors like Cal Dodd and Steve Blum each carved out their own distinct legacies for Marvel’s feral mutant. However, when McIntyre stepped into the booth for Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine, his goal wasn’t merely to replicate what came before him.

When questioned about which past portrayals of the character influenced his approach, McIntyre offered a comprehensive reply: virtually all of them.

“It was an amalgamation of every single one,” McIntyre explained during a conversation with Polygon centered on his animated series Golden Axe. “I was fortunate to have incredible mentors through the historic performances of the past, using them to help forge my own authentic spin and perspective on the role.”

Mastering the Mutant

For McIntyre, this meant carefully examining the core traits that made previous iterations of Logan resonate with audiences, and subsequently figuring out how to infuse his own identity into the beloved anti-hero.

“I would watch Hugh [Jackman], Cal Dodd, Steve Blum, and other phenomenal artists and think, ‘That is a masterclass in capturing the true spirit of Wolverine. Let me extract the fundamental essence of who he is and channel it authentically, because direct imitation simply won’t work,’” he shared.

This distinction holds immense significance for Insomniac’s unique take on the franchise. The upcoming game places Logan at the heart of an original narrative that honors decades of Marvel lore while charting entirely new territory. McIntyre’s vocal delivery intentionally builds upon this rich foundation rather than seeking to discard it.

The actor characterized the creative journey as studying Wolverine’s storied history, dissecting the written material provided, and determining which personal elements he could organically weave into the characterization.

“That is the ultimate reward of performance arts, isn’t it?” McIntyre reflected. “Having the privilege to stand upon the shoulders of giants and elevate the work further.”

Stepping into the role of James “Logan” Howlett, McIntyre imbues the character with unexpected emotional vulnerability alongside his trademark fury and brutality. This standout performance serves as a major highlight of the title, even if broader elements of the release received a mixed reception from critics. Polygon’s review critiqued the overarching plot and structural execution while singling out McIntyre’s multifaceted portrayal, emphasizing the genuine sensitivity pulsing beneath the character’s aggressive exterior.

With similarly polarized responses echoing across the broader critical landscape, Marvel’s Wolverine currently stands as one of the more controversial major PlayStation 5 exclusives.

Marvel’s Wolverine hits store shelves for PlayStation 5 on September 15. Meanwhile, fans can also hear McIntyre starring as Ax Battler in Golden Axe, the upcoming Paramount Plus animated series reviving Sega’s beloved arcade classic. The 10-episode series launches in its entirety on September 16.
