Udo Kier’s Death Shocked Hideo Kojima — German Actor Played a Role in the Horror “OD”
The head of Kojima Productions said he was at a loss for words.
German actor Udo Kier — familiar to gamers for his portrayal of the unhinged villain Yuri in Command & Conquer: Red Alert — has died at the age of 81.
Kier appeared in dozens of cult films, including Blade and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and collaborated with directors such as Lars von Trier and Werner Herzog, among others. In recent years he also worked in the games industry, lending his presence and voice to titles like Call of Duty: WWII and the psychological horror Martha Is Dead.
The actor was set to play a key role in Hideo Kojima’s upcoming horror project OD (Overdose), and he already appeared in the game’s teaser.
I am still at a loss for words — this happened far too suddenly. Due to the strike, we were unable to work on OD for an extended period and had to push production into next year. Even during that pause, Udo and I exchanged emails regularly and kept in close contact. When we met in Milan at the end of September, he spoke with great excitement about resuming filming next year. He was, as always, full of energy and amused me with his trademark “Udo-isms.” I still can’t believe it. Udo was more than an actor — he was a true icon of his era. We have lost a great icon, and there will never be another like him. Rest in peace, Udo. I will never forget you.
