Udo Kier has died — the Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 actor was set to play in Kojima’s new game

European film actor Udo Kier has died at the age of 81. The news was confirmed by his partner, artist Delbert McBride.

Kier earned acclaim through collaborations with directors Lars von Trier and Gus Van Sant. Mainstream audiences came to know him from films “My Own Private Idaho,” “Ace Ventura,” “Armageddon,” and “Blade.” Kier appeared in more than 200 film and television projects.

Gamers remember him as Yuri from Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2. He was instantly recognizable for his distinctive voice, unique speech patterns, and memorable appearance.

The actor’s passing affected Hideo Kojima, as Kier was scheduled to appear in his new game OD. Kojima wrote on X:

I have no words. It all happened so suddenly. Because of the strike, we were unable to film OD for a long time and were forced to postpone production until next year. Even then, Udo and I frequently exchanged emails and stayed in touch. When we met in Milan in September, he told me how happy he was that filming would resume. He was full of energy and cheered me with his characteristic “Udo-isms.” It’s still hard to believe. Udo was more than an actor — he was a genuine icon of his time. We have lost a great icon. There will never be another like him. Udo, rest in peace. I will never forget you.
