Ubisoft Unveils Teammates — Generative AI Prototype Where Teammates React to a Player’s Live Speech
Characters stay in-character and do not break the game’s lore.
Ubisoft has revealed its first fully playable exploratory project powered by generative AI — Teammates. This builds on the experimental work introduced with Neo NPC at GDC 2024, shifting the emphasis to authentic voice-driven squad control and NPCs that behave dynamically in combat and dialogue.
The story is set in a dystopian future. You play a resistance operative infiltrating an enemy base to locate five missing comrades and reconstruct their final memories. Accompanying you are two NPC partners — Pablo and Sofia — along with a voice AI assistant named Jaspar.
Key features:
- Jaspar understands natural speech: it can mark enemies and objects, explain lore, change game settings, and even pause play on voice command.
- Pablo and Sofia are fully fledged, “living” companions who accept orders during combat. They react not only to commands but also to the situation, the player’s tone, and previous remarks.
- Everything unfolds in real time: the AI generates dialogue and actions independently within author-defined boundaries — characters remain in-character and do not violate the lore.
Teammates has already completed closed testing with several hundred players. Ubisoft is gathering feedback, refining the technology, and preparing an explanatory video to showcase the project to a wider audience.
