Tupac joins cast of new Sega action game, 30 years after his death

<p><em>Stranger Than Heaven</em>, the highly anticipated action-adventure title from Sega set within the expanded <em>Yakuza</em> universe, made a massive splash at Summer Game Fest. While the announcement of a January 2027 release window was a highlight, the real talk of the show came during the closing moments of the trailer: a cinematic appearance by the legendary rapper Tupac Shakur.</p>

<p>Thirty years after his tragic passing in 1996 at the age of 25, Tupac remains a monumental cultural icon. His posthumous influence has been vast, earning him a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and even appearing in digital form at Coachella in 2012. However, his inclusion in <em>Stranger Than Heaven</em> marks a distinct new chapter in how his likeness is integrated into interactive media.</p>

<p>According to an official statement, RGG Studio and Sega are developing Tupac’s in-game presence under the direct supervision and authorization of his estate, Amaru Entertainment. The team emphasized a commitment to honoring his legacy with extreme care; notably, they have eschewed the use of AI, opting instead to build his character model manually using historical photographs and archival footage.</p>

<p>Tupac is not the only historical figure to be immortalized in the project. He joins the late Bunta Sugawara, the renowned Japanese actor famous for his classic yakuza film roles, in the game’s cast.</p>

<p>Serving as a sprawling prequel to the <em>Yakuza</em>/<em>Like a Dragon</em> saga, <em>Stranger than Heaven</em> chronicles the rise of the Tojo Clan. The narrative spans half a century of Japanese history—from 1915 to 1965—tracking the intertwined journeys of Makoto Daito and his lifelong friend, Yu Shinjo, as they navigate the treacherous power structures of the criminal underworld and the entertainment industry.</p>

<p><em>Stranger Than Heaven</em> is scheduled to launch on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.</p>
