The composer has received 15 Academy Award nominations and is widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s most influential film composers.

Director Shawn Levy has officially confirmed that Thomas Newman will compose the score for Star Wars: The Starfighter — the composer responsible for the music on many beloved films, from The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile to White Bird: A New Wonder. His career includes 15 Oscar nominations and numerous awards and nominations from the Grammys, Emmys, BAFTA and other institutions.

Speaking on the podcast On Film… with Kevin McCarthy, Levy described Newman as a “maestro” and admitted he had long hoped to collaborate with him. According to the director, he called Newman personally, explained his vision for the project and sent the script — after which Newman agreed to come aboard.

Levy has previously emphasized that his picture will be neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Skywalker saga: the project is conceived as a completely standalone story within the Star Wars universe. The screenplay was written by Jonathan Tropper (Banshee), and the principal cast includes Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Amy Adams and Aaron Pierre.

The film’s worldwide premiere is scheduled for May 28, 2027.
