It is the first day of May, and here in Minnesota—where a significant portion of our team is based—a freeze warning is currently in effect until the early hours of tomorrow. While we aren’t quite ready to embrace the outdoors, it’s the perfect excuse to settle in and explore some compelling new gaming experiences.

Before diving into our weekend recommendations, here are the week’s top headlines:

Saros

By Kyle Hilliard

I’ve clocked roughly 76 hours in Saros and am agonizingly close to securing the Platinum trophy. I finished the main campaign and penned our official review around the 40-hour mark, but I keep returning to Housemarque’s latest rogue-shooter. In this industry, we typically move on to the next major release the moment a review is filed, but I simply cannot walk away from this one.

Even if I don’t manage to unlock every trophy, I intend to keep playing to fully max out my skill trees and complete every objective. If you felt intimidated by Returnal, I urge you to give Saros a shot. It is certainly challenging, but it offers a much more accessible learning curve. Don’t be discouraged by early failures; persistence is key. Check out our beginner’s guide and our developer interview for extra help. This is my current Game of the Year front-runner.

Invincible VS

By Matt Miller

Much like titans of the genre such as Marvel vs. Capcom, Invincible VS brilliantly channels the intensity and distinctive character dynamics of its source material. Beneath the flashy, visceral combat, the developers at Quarter Up have built a deep, nuanced tag-team system that rewards dedication. That said, if you’re just here to enjoy the narrative action, you can easily scale down the difficulty. It’s rare to see a brand-new fighting game launch with this much polish and style, and we’ve had a blast with our early sessions. Read our full Invincible VS review for more details.

Far Far West

By Matt Miller

If you’re hunting for a cooperative shooter to enjoy with friends, the early access launch of Far Far West is a must-play. Its premise—robot cowboys fighting the undead—is delightfully bizarre, but the gameplay loop feels reminiscent of high-octane hits like Helldivers and Deep Rock Galactic. While you can tackle it solo, the experience truly shines when you’re coordinating with a squad on a flying train across the desert. Between the deep customization options and the fluid combat, this title has already generated significant buzz on Steam.

Vampire Crawlers

By Wesley LeBlanc

I published my review of Vampire Crawlers this morning, but I’m nowhere near finished with it. The core loop—combining fast-paced, high-stakes combat with dynamic deck-building—is incredibly addictive. The sheer variety of characters, card combinations, and run modifiers ensures that every session feels distinct. It’s a bit more relaxed than heavy hitters like Slay the Spire 2, making it the ideal “second-screen” game to enjoy while catching up on a show or rewatching a favorite movie. I’m seriously considering picking up a second copy on Switch. Check out our full Vampire Crawlers review here.
