How Sony Profits from Xbox Games
Sony holds a portion of the patents for Blu-ray technology, which allows the company to collect small licensing royalties from the production of disc-based Xbox games.
Sony and Microsoft have competed for gamers for many years, but the businesses of both companies extend far beyond consoles. Certain technologies from one manufacturer are used in the products of their main competitor.
Third-party companies manufacture discs for Xbox, and using the Blu-ray format requires a license from the owners of the corresponding patents. These owners include Sony, which can receive a small share of the manufacturing fees for certain physical editions released for Microsoft consoles. Consequently, purchasing a physical Xbox game can theoretically generate a small amount of revenue for the owner of the PlayStation brand.

These sums are certainly not large enough to noticeably impact Sony’s financial results. The fee applies only to the disc technology rather than the game sold. However, this serves as a clear example of how complex relationships between major technology companies can be. On store shelves, Xbox and PlayStation remain competitors, even though their businesses intersect in unexpected ways.
