The Team Behind 2025’s Best RPG is Developing an Open-World Lord of the Rings Game

Warhorse Studios, the visionary developer behind the critically acclaimed Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, has officially pulled back the curtain on two ambitious new projects currently in development.

Predictably, the team confirmed that a “new Kingdom Come adventure” is on the horizon. While it is reasonable to speculate this could be a third installment in the core series, the studio has remained tight-lipped, leaving open the possibility of a spin-off that explores different gameplay mechanics or themes.

Even more intriguing is the announcement of an open-world RPG set within the expansive universe of Middle-earth. Whispers of this project first surfaced in late March via a discussion on the Tolkien-focused podcast Tolkien Polska. These claims align with earlier reports from Insider Gaming, which noted a high-budget Lord of the Rings title was in the works, though the identity of the lead studio remained a mystery until now.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 developer claims to have been fired, replaced by AI

A former team member alleges that Warhorse Studios is pivoting to AI-driven translation tools.

Previous reports suggested that this Middle-earth project aims to be a third-person action title capable of standing toe-to-toe with Hogwarts Legacy. Industry rumors also point to significant financial backing, with approximately $100 million in funding allegedly provided by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office.

The vision of a modern, expansive open-world RPG grounded in Tolkien’s lore is undeniably compelling for fans worldwide. Given that Warhorse Studios has promised to share further details only when they are ready, we likely shouldn’t expect a release for either game in 2026. Nevertheless, many are hopeful for a teaser or official reveal before the year concludes.
