The End of Oak Street Director Discusses Cloverfield Connection and Monster Movie Trends

The premise of The End of Oak Street brings to mind several TV series and movies focusing on suburban terror, such as Gremlins and Poltergeist. Director David Robert Mitchell drew inspiration from those titles for his film. Oak Street follows the Platts, a family whose lives are turned upside down when they wake up one day to find their quaint neighborhood besieged by gigantic dinosaurs. The Platts are played by Ewan McGregor as Greg and Anne Hathaway as Denise. The parallels to the Jurassic Park franchise are also clear.

Some fans are convinced there is more to Oak Street than meets the eye. Specifically, viewers question whether the movie, originally titled Flowervale Street, connects to Matt Reeves’s 2008 sci-fi horror film, Cloverfield.

This debate exists largely because J.J. Abrams produced Oak Street. Abrams has a history of acquiring independent scripts through his production company, Bad Robot, and turning them into Cloverfield spin-offs.

Is The End of Oak Street a Cloverfield spin-off?

Abrams is well-known for his work on major franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars. Alongside Drew Goddard, creator of the Netflix series Daredevil, Abrams is a key figure in creating and shaping the Cloverfield franchise.

The original Cloverfield used a found-footage format to follow six survivors of a brutal monster attack in New York. The film received a strong reception from critics and audiences, prompting Abrams and Goddard to purchase two unrelated scripts—titled The Cellar and God Particle—and develop them into 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox.

10 Cloverfield Lane focuses on a hostile event rendering Earth’s surface uninhabitable. Meanwhile, The Cloverfield Paradox follows astronauts conducting a particle accelerator test that opens portals to other realities. That test transports gigantic creatures and summons supernatural attacks across multiple parallel universes, explaining the events of the prior films and opening doors for future disasters.

Given that background, alongside the involvement of Abrams and Bad Robot, theorizing that the Platts face a disaster caused by a particle accelerator test is understandable. However, Abrams has explicitly shot down that theory.

“The only connection to our Cloverfield movies is that Ewan’s partner is Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who was the star of 10 Cloverfield Lane, who we were very lucky to get to work with and who I adore,” Abrams told The Hollywood Reporter. “So there was that, but other than that, people are just making connections that they happen to see.”

The End of Oak Street is not a Cloverfield film.

The End of Oak Street’s time travel explained

Although Oak Street has no connection to Cloverfield, viewers leave the theater with questions about time travel and its role in the twisty ending.

After a devastating storm, the Platts and their entire neighborhood are pulled through a massive wormhole that transports them back to the prehistoric era of the dinosaurs. Dinosaurs and the nineteen-eighties do not mix, and most neighbors end up consumed by carnivorous dinosaurs.

Audiences looking for an in-depth explanation of time travel within Oak Street might feel disappointed. However, the time-travel elements highlight how the premise diverges from Cloverfield, making the film stand entirely on its own.
