In 2016, Captain America: Civil War brought the Avengers to one of their toughest battles by pitting Team Iron Man against Team Cap. The scene establishes the exact version of Peter seen in his own solo movies, beginning with the brilliance of his Civil War introduction.

The Best Way to Bring In Peter Parker

Tom Holland’s take on Peter Parker is considered by many to be the best version of the web-slinging hero. Fans debate the topic frequently, but even die-hard fans of Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield admit that Tom Holland understands how Peter Parker and Spider-Man are two different roles. Peter Parker as a character hides his secret identity, yet remains nerdy, loves science, displays a creative streak that enables him to photograph for the Daily Bugle, and stays slightly awkward while maintaining his sarcasm.

As Spider-Man, he enjoys freedom. The general public does not know he is Peter Parker, allowing him to crack jokes and speak in ways Peter might not otherwise. He does not have to hide behind anything because the mask does that for him. The mask also places a heavy burden on Peter by making him the hero New York City needs. That anonymity offers a freedom Peter lacks while pretending to be an ordinary teenager in daily life. The only environment where he shows his authentic self is around people like MJ, who knows both sides of Peter and Spider-Man.

Peter’s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe differs because he is already operating as Spider-Man while still acting like a kid figuring things out. The movie skips showing Peter watching Uncle Ben die or learning how to become Spider-Man because audiences have seen those beats before. Instead, Civil War placed Peter directly alongside the Avengers. Watching Peter Parker as Spider-Man ask Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan, and Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, how their gear worked proved hilarious, alongside the iconic moments between Peter and Steve Rogers.
