The developers at Playtonic are shifting gears, trading the platforming antics of their mascot duo for high-octane competition in their newly announced title, Super Yooka-Laylee Kart. This vibrant, pixel-infused racer promises a comprehensive package featuring a full story-driven campaign, intense rival face-offs, time trials, and support for up to eight players in local split-screen.
Freshly unveiled during the SGF Day of the Devs showcase, the game moves away from the series’ exploration roots to embrace arcade-style kart racing. Players can expect a mix of accessible “pick-up-and-play” mechanics and deeper technical driving strategies. A standout addition is the “Rage” system—a dynamic meter that fills throughout a race, granting players the ability to unleash powerful, tide-turning revenge maneuvers.
Beyond the competitive multiplayer suite, the game boasts a substantial single-player experience. According to the studio, the story mode is packed with tournaments, endurance challenges, and various skill-based trials designed to constantly push the player’s limits.

Playtonic has also introduced a layer of strategic progression: coins earned on the track can be reinvested into your kart between events. These upgrades allow for custom tuning, ranging from specialized handling improvements to increased top speeds. The studio plans to hold several beta sessions prior to the official launch to fine-tune the online multiplayer infrastructure.
While an official release date has yet to be determined, Super Yooka-Laylee Kart has been confirmed for PC. In the meantime, you can brush up on the franchise by revisiting our previous coverage of Yooka-Laylee and the acclaimed Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair.
