Street Fighter Movie to Release in Theaters in One Month

With fun Super Mario Bros. and Sonic movies coming out regularly now, and a promising new Resident Evil adaptation arriving in a few days, we are past the age where a movie based on a video game was an automatic critical and commercial flop. Still, there is one franchise that has been letting fans down for more than 30 years, and it is getting a chance to redeem itself in just one month.

In 1987, Capcom released the first Street Fighter game. Since then, the company has produced a wide array of games with characters that belong in the video game hall of fame. But when the 1994 film Street Fighter arrived in theaters, it ditched the tournament story and replaced it with a cheesy terrorism plot. Then in 2009 came Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, which also lacked a proper tournament and opted instead for a Chun-Li origin story.

However, on Oct. 16, audiences may finally get what they have wanted for decades.

A new Street Fighter movie is coming

The 2026 Street Fighter film is directed by Kitao Sakurai of The Eric Andre Show and focuses on a fighting tournament. Ryu played by Andrew Koji and Ken Masters played by Noah Centineo are the lead characters. They are recruited by Chun-Li played by Callina Liang to return to the World Warrior Tournament.

Along with those three leads, the movie features Joe Anoa’i as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, and Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim. The cast also includes comedian Eric André as Don Sauvage, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, and Jason Momoa as Blanka. Whether that cast is enough to ensure quality remains to be seen, but it is a promising lineup.

From the trailer, the movie looks like a lot of fun. The characters match their video game appearances with Guile sporting his signature hairdo, and the action appears directly inspired by the games. While it is best to remain cautious when walking into any Street Fighter movie, this may finally be what fans have wanted since the 1990s.

Street Fighter will arrive in theaters Oct. 16.
