Spider-Man Brand New Day Becomes Highest Grossing Film in Domestic Box Office History

Spider-Man holds the top spot at the domestic box office. After 47 days in theaters, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has overtaken Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing film in domestic box office history. The film reached $936.773 million on Tuesday, surpassing the 936 million earned by The Force Awakens. The Star Wars film had held the title for more than a decade following its December 18, 2015 release.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has also performed excellently at the global box office with a total of $2.45 billion. That figure places the film behind only Avatar at $2.9 billion and Avengers: Endgame at $2.7 billion. James Cameron films round out the rest of the top five, with Avatar: The Way of Water at $2.3 billion and Titanic at $2.2 billion.

A remaining test for Brand New Day is whether it can become the first film to clear $1 billion at the domestic box office. While technically possible, the milestone seems unlikely now without a re-release, given that the film earned around $12 million to $13 million from September 8 to September 14. Brand New Day launched with an explosive domestic debut of $360 million, marking the biggest opening weekend ever in the United States. These figures are not adjusted for inflation. If adjusted, Gone with the Wind would still lead the competition with a United States gross over $200 million, which equates to nearly $1.9 billion in modern currency.

2026 has been a turnaround year for the box office

Brand New Day leads a wave of successful domestic box office releases. The Odyssey ranks as the second-highest-grossing film in North America with $601 million since its July 17 opening. Animated films Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie take third and fourth place with $480 million and $430 million, respectively.

Unexpected horror hits also shaped the year. Obsession sits at seventh place in the 2026 domestic box office with $263 million, while Backrooms earned $197 million. Obsession was produced for under $1 million, and Backrooms had a $10 million budget. Overall, the domestic box office tracks toward a $10 billion year, which would mark its first such milestone since the pre-pandemic era. As of last month, it passed $7 billion, representing a 20 percent increase over the same point in 2025.
