Sony Passed on PHYSINT, Leaving Hideo Kojima’s New Game to Xbox
PlayStation Studios has dropped PHYSINT, leading Kojima Productions to hand the project over to Xbox and continue developing the game alongside Microsoft.
PHYSINT was set to be one of PlayStation’s major projects and Hideo Kojima’s new action-espionage game, which had been linked to Sony’s next-generation console. PlayStation Studios has now confirmed the end of the partnership:
PlayStation Studios Update: After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to end our collaboration with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on the PHYSINT project. We continue to hold enormous admiration for Hideo Kojima’s vision for this game.
Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading creative collaboration that sets new genre standards, and we look forward to working closely with Hideo Kojima and his multi-award-winning independent studio again in the future.
Kojima Productions immediately announced that development on PHYSINT will continue with Xbox. Kojima clarified that Sony was the one that walked away from the project, stating that the studio received an unexpected cancellation notice in mid-June. The team spent the last three months searching for a new partner before selecting Microsoft.
Rest assured that work on PHYSINT, our action-espionage game designed to redefine the genre, is ongoing and will continue.
The head of Xbox also called the collaboration an important moment:
PHYSINT and OD! Proud to be building both games with @HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN in Japan. A great moment for XBOX.
