Sony earned more than $1.2 billion from selling its exclusives on Steam
Analysts observe that the initial “novelty” effect is gradually wearing off.
According to Alinea Analytics, Sony has earned more than $1.5 billion from selling its games on Steam.
Alinea estimates that total revenue from sales of all PlayStation Studios titles on Steam has surpassed $1.5 billion. Roughly $350 million of that went to Valve as commission (30% on the first $10 million of a game’s sales, 25% on $10–50 million, and 20% beyond $50 million).
Top 5 best-selling PlayStation Studios games on Steam:
- Helldivers 2 — 12.7 million copies
- Horizon Zero Dawn — 4.5 million copies
- God of War (2018) — 4.2 million copies
- Days Gone — 3.4 million copies
- Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered — 2.7 million copies
Analysts also note that the “novelty” effect is diminishing. The audience that waited for years to see former PlayStation exclusives arrive on PC is largely satisfied, and new releases no longer provoke the same level of excitement.
Notable examples:
- God of War (2018) sold 2.5 million copies in its first 427, while God of War Ragnarök moved 2.5 times fewer in the same period.
- Copies of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered sold in its first 294 were twice as many as those of Spider-Man 2 over a comparable span.
