Sony Adds AI Upscaling to Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei on PlayStation 5
The Quick Spectral Super Resolution technology helps improve image quality on the standard version of the console.
PlayStation 5 Pro users have access to the PSSR upscaler. However, as Sony noted in a recent blog post, developers asked the company whether it would be possible to use a similar technology on the base version of the console.
In early October, Sony unveiled a new version of the upscaler for the standard PlayStation 5, called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (or QSSR):
This technology emerged as part of Project Amethyst, our AI graphics collaboration with AMD, and is an accelerated version of PSSR built on two key innovations: a simplified neural network architecture and a thoroughly optimized implementation that maximizes the capabilities of the PS5.
Because of this, Sony explains, the benefits of AI upscaling are now available on the regular PlayStation 5: “QSSR provides noticeable improvements in both image detail and stability.”
The first games to use this new technology will be Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both will receive patches today adding QSSR as an optional graphics setting on PlayStation 5.
Although some gamers currently criticize AI technologies and label everything “slop” if AI is used in any way or perceived to be involved, the initial reaction to Sony’s technology presentation has been mostly positive.

Users such as ChrlsPC have called QSSR “one of the good examples of AI usage, especially considering that it doesn’t rely on unethical data centers” (addressing one of the environmental concerns raised by opponents of AI technology regarding data center emissions).
