Silent Hill Producer Calls on Industry Giants to Stop Fearing Risks

Motoi Okamoto, producer of Silent Hill f, warned that the video game industry will stagnate unless large, well-funded companies start taking more risks. He argued that willingness to risk failure is the catalyst for innovation, while fear of missteps renders the market uniform and predictable.

Okamoto pointed out that indie and AA teams often outperform AAA projects in sales today because they’re prepared to take bolder creative leaps. Large publishers, by contrast, avoid experimentation — with single-game budgets sometimes topping hundreds of millions, even a minor error can harm a company’s image.

On his social channels he explained that independent studios frequently read player reactions to teasers and trailers to decide whether to proceed with a release. Major publishers can’t rely on that approach — the cost to their reputation is simply too great.

Okamoto called on young developers to encourage their leaders to embrace new ideas. He recognizes that newcomers have limited sway, but believes seasoned professionals should shoulder the responsibility of pushing for change.

“It’s not enough to speak — you must back your words with financial commitment.”

He said Silent Hill f itself illustrates his point: the series is set in Japan for the first time, employs an unconventional combat system, and has earned favorable reviews. Okamoto is convinced that the success of titles like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Hollow Knight shows players are no longer willing to pay for repetitive, formulaic games.
