Sega Explains Cancellation of Super Game Project
Sega explained that it canceled its Super Game initiative because the large-scale live-service project proved too expensive and risky for the company.
Super Game was announced back in 2021 as a next-generation live-service project. The company wanted to build a new intellectual property that would achieve global popularity and grow over many years.
Sega President Shuji Utsumi told Nikkei that over time, the costs for development and ongoing maintenance grew much higher than expected. An analysis showed that the required investments became too risky under current market conditions.

At the same time, Sega is not abandoning live-service games. The company continues to support Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, Sega Football Club Champions 2026, and Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage. Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is also planned to be operated as a constantly updated service.
The decision followed the cancellation of Hyenas and came against the backdrop of failures for expensive live-service games across the industry. Sega considers launching another project of this scale to be too risky.
