Roblox may introduce wagering on in-game events, platform CEO David Baszucki said. He clarified the system would need to be “educational and legal,” and that the Robux currency would most likely not be used.
Before that can happen, a number of legal issues must be resolved.
Over the past year Roblox has seen both record successes and controversies. Grow a Garden surpassed Fortnite’s record for concurrent players online — exceeding 22 million. The platform has received regular updates, adding new crops, pets, and seasonal events.
The betting proposal has provoked a wave of criticism. Earlier, Roblox drew scrutiny from a Louisiana court over inadequate protections for children. In response, the company strengthened its age-verification algorithms and raised the age threshold for mature content from 17 to 18.
It remains unclear whether this feature will be implemented or how it would function, but attention on Roblox is unlikely to subside.
