Rising memory prices will hit demanding games — Epic Games chief sounds the alarm

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney replied on X to user theo’s complaint about a 64 GB RAM kit jumping from $240 to $498 in just one month.

Sweeney clarified that memory makers are shifting production capacity toward AI data center needs because it’s more lucrative than the consumer market.

Rising RAM prices will pose challenges for resource-intensive games for years. Manufacturers are reallocating their cutting-edge DRAM capacity to serve AI workloads because it yields higher returns than the consumer segment.

Sweeney suggests this could lead NVIDIA and AMD to slow the rate at which they increase video memory, and prompt developers to manage resources more conservatively.

The uptick in component costs, including RAM, may be one factor behind Valve’s delay in announcing a price for the Steam Machine.
