British filmmaker Ridley Scott (“Alien”, “Gladiator”) has launched a scathing critique of contemporary Hollywood output.
Scott argued that cinematic quality has been far outpaced by sheer volume.
“The number of films being made today, literally across the globe — millions. Not thousands, but millions… and most of them are rubbish,” the 87-year-old director told the BFI in an interview.
He added that his antidote to the surrounding mediocrity is to revisit his own catalogue:
“It’s awful, but I’ve started watching my own films — and they’re actually quite good! They also don’t seem to age.”
Scott recently wrapped production on the sci-fi feature Constellation of the Dog, starring Jacob Elordi and Margaret Qualley, with a release planned for March 2026. The director is also actively developing a third installment of Gladiator.
