PS2 Legend Returns — First Scores for Tokyo Xtreme Racer
The legendary Tokyo Xtreme Racer series, a definitive staple for PlayStation 2 and Dreamcast enthusiasts, has finally returned. Following its successful launch on PC, the high-speed racing title has now made its way to the PS5.
Originally released on Steam by developer Genki, the project garnered an impressive 94% positive rating from over 14,000 player reviews. The gameplay heavily draws inspiration from the iconic street-racing culture found in the Wangan Midnight manga and anime series.
Critics have begun sharing their initial impressions of the console port. Reviewers are largely praising the game’s “PS2-era spirit” and its expansive campaign, which features a wealth of unlockable content. PushSquare awarded the title a 7/10, noting that while the atmosphere is spot-on, track repetition is noticeable and the drifting mechanics lack depth. Similarly, Traxxion gave it a 7/10, highlighting the solid graphics and smooth performance on PS5, though they mentioned minor animation hitches that occasionally occur during auto-saving.
