Prime Video’s RoboCop Series Casts Lead Role

Dan Stevens has been cast as Alex Murphy in Amazon’s upcoming television series reboot of RoboCop, according to a report from Deadline. Peter Weller originated the role in the 1987 classic, Robert John Burke took over the part in 1993, and Joel Kinnaman played the character in the 2014 film remake.

Stevens previously starred in ITV’s Downton Abbey and FX’s Legion, alongside roles in major studio features including Beauty and the Beast, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. Stevens also played an android in the 2021 German sci-fi film I’m Your Man and will next appear alongside Adria Arjona in the A24 action-thriller Onslaught.

Amazon MGM Studios and Blumhouse Atomic Monster confirmed in July that the franchise would return as an eight-episode streaming series titled RoboCop on Prime Video. Peter Ocko (Lodge 49, Pushing Daisies) serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Original RoboCop co-creators and writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are executive producing, joined by James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett for Blumhouse Atomic Monster.

According to Amazon MGM, the new series follows a massive tech conglomerate that:

convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force — a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer.

Directed by Paul Verhoeven from a script by Neumeier and Miner, the original 1987 RoboCop combined intense action with satire aimed at corporate greed, unchecked capitalism, gentrification, and the privatization of municipal services. The original movie spawned two sequels, RoboCop 2 in 1990 and RoboCop 3 in 1993, as well as comic books, video games, animated programs, and live-action television series. A cinematic reboot starring Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, and Michael Keaton arrived in 2014.
