Pokémon-Inspired RPG Dokimon Quest Is Free on Steam
Creature-collecting RPGs have remained popular for decades, led by long-running franchises like Pokémon and Digimon. Newer releases continue to experiment with the format. Palworld offered a more chaotic take on the genre, earning the label “Pokémon with guns” before expanding into its own trading card game and an upcoming MMO spinoff.
While standing out against icons like fat Pikachu is a tall order, independent monster-taming games regularly offer fresh worlds to explore. Players looking for an alternative can currently claim Dokimon Quest at no cost on Steam.
Developed by Yanako RPGs, Dokimon Quest uses pixel art reminiscent of the Game Boy Color era. The game is free to keep on Steam until August 26 at 10 a.m. PDT. Once claimed, the title remains in your library permanently.
What is Dokimon Quest about?
The story follows a young trainer on a journey to find a missing childhood friend. Along the way, players can capture, train, and battle more than 140 original monsters. The adventure spans an open world containing towns, caves, shrines, oceans, and mountains.

The campaign lasts between 15 and 20 hours. Battles take place against rival rangers and shady corporations, and overworld encounters allow players to initiate combat directly in the field. After finishing the main story, players can hunt for rare monsters and alternate color variants.
Yanako RPGs included several modern conveniences, such as accelerated battle animations, optional gameplay tips, and a dedicated quest log. The game features nine playable characters, more than 20 retro color palettes, and a choice between 8-bit chiptune and piano arrangements for the soundtrack.
Dokimon Quest launched in 2024 and holds a “Mostly Positive” rating on Steam, with roughly three-quarters of user reviews recommending it. Yanako RPGs is also developing a sequel, Dokimon: Quest 2, which does not yet have an official release date.
