Playground Games Discusses Xbox Support Amid Claims Fable Almost Faced Cancellation

Playground Games studio head Ralph Fulton has revealed that the studio survived multiple waves of layoffs and project cancellations at Xbox, explaining that Fable was supported as a core part of the Microsoft ecosystem.

Work on the new Fable began around 2016, and the game was officially shown only in 2020. During this time, Xbox experienced massive changes, including cutbacks and the cancellation of major projects. Among them were Perfect Dark and Project Blackbird, and in July Microsoft announced another 1,600 layoffs.

Fable avoided this fate. Playground Games head Ralph Fulton stated:

So many people at Xbox consider Fable to be central to the DNA of the platform.

According to him, this attitude helped the team continue working on the game during its lengthy production.

Fulton also called Fable important for the entire industry, noting a combination of elements not found in other games.

The role-playing game will release on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PS5. The launch will take place on February 23, 2027.
