Players Find Secret Mode in Ghost of Yotei That Completely Changes the Atmosphere

Players have uncovered a hidden “Watanabe mode” in Ghost of Yotei that drenches the game in a lo-fi atmosphere and fundamentally changes the feel of the gameplay.

The mode is named after Shin’ichirō Watanabe, the director of Cowboy Bebop. It adds a bespoke lo-fi soundtrack that cultivates a tranquil mood. Interestingly, it’s enabled through the display/video settings rather than the audio menu — which is why some players never discovered it.

On forums and social networks fans have been surprised by the find. One Redditor wrote: “It’s astonishing. The blend of 17th‑century Japan and lo‑fi sounds odd on paper, but it fits perfectly.”

Players say that riding across the scenic vistas to mellow beats has become one of the most peaceful moments in the game, though many would like to see a broader selection of tracks.
