Following the launch of Fortnite’s seventh season, fans reacted sharply to the use of artificial intelligence. Players observed that the new posters and sprays — and even some of the music — seemed AI-generated.
Frictions grew after Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney recently opposed a proposal on Steam that would require labeling content produced with AI.
The first signs appeared during the Zero Hour event on November 29, which drew 10.5 million players and introduced the new Golden Coast map. Players flagged a number of “AI errors”: for example, the “Mile High Retreat” poster showed a yeti with nine fingers, while the “Sauce Talk” poster displayed smoothing and distortions typical of generative AI. Screenshots of fictional in-game projects — “Cooking With Thunder” and “Golden Opportunity” — have also circulated, showing odd clothing folds and implausible food details.
On Reddit, 84.7% of users said AI should not be used in games the way it is in Fortnite. The hashtag “no to AI slop” gathered more than 3,000 votes.
