Dune: Awakening Developer Tempers Expectations Regarding The Last of Us Comparisons
Dune: Awakening should appeal to people who have been looking for a survival game.
This summer, developer Funcom detailed the single-player mode for Dune: Awakening. This announcement caught the attention of players who were previously put off by the project’s multiplayer format. The developers noted that people’s expectations of their game are sometimes inflated.
During a recent interview at Gamescom, Dune: Awakening Creative Director Joel Bylos discussed what players should expect from the new mode:
I think if people who play [Dune: Awakening this month] were looking for a truly high-quality single-player survival game, there won’t be any problems.
However, Bylos explained that if players expect something like The Last of Us from Naughty Dog, they are “probably barking up the wrong tree. So as long as [players’] expectations match the genre and type of game, they will be quite satisfied.”

The single-player mode of Dune: Awakening will feature all NPCs, but no other players. Meanwhile, in the endgame, the developers will simulate the participation of other players in faction conflicts to “maintain competitive interest.”
Dune: Awakening is already available on PC via Steam, and the console release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, alongside an update, is scheduled for September 22.
