Molyneux also shared warm recollections of Phil Spencer, who led Microsoft Game Studios during the Xbox 360 era and later rose to head Xbox and the company’s broader gaming efforts.
“He’s one of the finest people I’ve worked with,” Molyneux continued. “I don’t say that to flatter him — Phil genuinely loves games and is exceptionally bright. He’s spent his career inside Microsoft, and for a time he even worked from the Lionhead offices, so we collaborated a lot. He told me, ‘Peter, I’d like to put your talents to wider use at Microsoft.’”
The comment stands in contrast to more recent criticism of Spencer from some corners of the industry after a string of project cancellations and notable Game Pass price adjustments, but Molyneux remains complimentary.
“I’m someone who thrives on approval, so when he said, ‘We want to make you a Microsoft partner,’ I felt elated — like a kid back at school wanting to be liked. That feeling overshadowed the harder memories, such as my time as a senior vice president at EA.”
