Overwatch Creator Reveals He Left Blizzard Due to Blackmail and Pressure From Activision

Jeff Kaplan once found himself at a defining professional crossroads.

After years of remaining largely out of the spotlight, Jeff Kaplan—the visionary behind the Overwatch franchise and a seasoned Blizzard Entertainment veteran—has re-emerged. The developer recently unveiled his latest endeavor, a multiplayer survival title titled The Legend of California, while sharing an intimate look into the circumstances that led to his departure from Blizzard after a distinguished 19-year tenure.

Kaplan’s journey at Blizzard began in the early 2000s, where he initially served as a quality assurance tester for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. He eventually rose to become the Game Director for World of Warcraft and the primary architect of the Overwatch universe.

According to Kaplan, parting ways with the studio was a profound personal blow that left a lasting impact.

He confessed that he still maintains a deep-seated affection for Blizzard. However, in the wake of his exit, he realized just how agonizing the transition truly was. Likening the experience to a period of mourning, he admitted it took a long time to reconcile with the fact that he was no longer part of the studio where he had intended to spend the entirety of his career.

A pivotal moment that accelerated his departure involved a confrontation with Activision Blizzard’s financial leadership. Kaplan revealed that the Chief Financial Officer set a rigid annual revenue quota for Overwatch, accompanied by a stark warning: failure to hit these financial targets would result in mass layoffs.

Kaplan detailed how he was given a specific date and a precise income threshold the project was expected to reach. If the figures fell short, the executive suggested the company might terminate approximately one thousand employees, with the moral responsibility for those job losses placed squarely on Kaplan’s shoulders as the lead.

Although Kaplan refrained from explicitly naming the executive, the role of CFO was held at that time by Dennis Durkin, who left the organization in May 2021—exactly one month after Kaplan’s own exit was announced.

Since leaving Blizzard, Kaplan has founded a new studio called Kintsugiyama. The name draws inspiration from the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold lacquer. To Kaplan, this symbolizes the resilience of industry professionals who have weathered difficult trials and emerged stronger because of them.
