Frictional Games, the visionary studio behind atmospheric masterpieces like Soma and Amnesia: The Dark Descent, has officially postponed the release of its latest project, Ontos, to 2027. The title was originally unveiled during The Game Awards 2025 with an initial target of a 2026 release.
Set against the backdrop of Samsara—a former luxury moon hotel repurposed into something far more sinister—the narrative follows engineer Aditi Amani. Lured to the facility by her father, a brilliant scientist whose legacy has shifted into the realm of the prophetic, Amani must navigate a fractured reality. The gameplay promises to be deeply immersive, centering on tactile, systems-heavy mechanics that challenge players to scavenge for resources, manually operate complex machinery, and engage with analog technology. Samsara itself is envisioned as a vast, labyrinthine expanse divided into surreal biomes, each governed by competing factions and harboring unsettling terrors.
In an official statement released via social media, the development team explained that they require additional time to fully realize their vision. They describe Ontos as their most ambitious undertaking to date, noting that the scale, environmental complexity, and narrative depth require more refinement to meet their high standards.
