GTA VI to Feature Hundreds of Thousands of Animations, Surpassing Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar Games has created more than 600,000 NPC animations for Grand Theft Auto VI, an elevenfold increase over Grand Theft Auto V and double the number produced for Red Dead Redemption 2.
The expanded animation library gives the residents of Leonida distinct behaviors, individual personalities, situational memory, and dynamic reactions to player provocations.
Rockstar dedicated an entire office in Los Angeles to NPC development. Inhabitants across different regions of Leonida will act according to their surroundings, ensuring beachgoers do not share the routines of urban pedestrians. Characters will also carry their own temperaments, and some may draw weapons and open fire if provoked.
While NPCs in GTA V often drop an item and immediately forget the disruption, GTA VI characters are designed to retain awareness of such events and react accordingly. Rockstar also highlighted that NPC behavior is largely handcrafted rather than relying solely on procedural generation.

Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut described the level of environmental detail across the world:
Someone thought through every single room in the game. Who sits where, what they drink, what marks are left on the table. In the photos hanging on the walls, you will see the people who are in that room, with their arm tattoos and their families behind them. Everything was created, built, photographed, and placed into a random room of a random building across a massive city and an entire world.
