Nearly 20 Years Later, Arkane Founder Understands Why Valve Canceled Ravenholm Game
Arkane Studios founder Raphael Colantonio has come to terms with the past.
Nearly two decades later, Arkane Studios founder Raphael Colantonio explained that he now understands why Valve decided to cancel the studio’s Half-Life spin-off centered on Ravenholm.
Arkane worked on the standalone Ravenholm game in the late 2000s, completing a substantial portion of the project, with roughly 10 levels built. Nearly an hour of gameplay later leaked online, revealing what the canceled title would have looked like.
In an interview with Press Box PR, Colantonio admitted that it took the team about a decade to finally get over the cancellation of Ravenholm.
We were incredibly excited about the opportunity to make this game and poured an enormous amount of creative energy into it, and when the decision was made to cancel the project, we didn’t understand why it happened.
According to the Arkane founder, the developers were younger at the time and simply did not want to accept the reality of the situation. Over time, the rationale behind the decision became much clearer.

Colantonio believes the economics of Half-Life 2 and its downloadable content played a key role. Valve evaluated whether the cost of developing a new project was justified by potential returns, especially given the attention and resources it would demand from across the company.
Colantonio also noted that Ravenholm was largely an experiment for Valve. Prior to Arkane’s involvement, Valve had explored several concepts for a standalone Ravenholm game, including a project in development between 2005 and 2007.
Ultimately, Valve decided that continued investment in the project made no economic sense. While the decision was painful for Arkane at the time, Colantonio now acknowledges that it made sense from a business perspective.
