Paramount Reorients TMNT Plans; R‑rated The Last Ronin Film Put on Hold

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are moving back into the spotlight, but not everyone will welcome the direction. Paramount — now under Skydance ownership — appears to be preparing another franchise relaunch. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the previously in-development R‑rated adaptation of TMNT: The Last Ronin has been shelved for the time being. Read more at The Hollywood Reporter.

The studio reportedly wants a different tonal approach and has tapped veteran producer Neal H. Moritz (known for the Sonic the Hedgehog and Fast & Furious franchises) to steer the property toward a broader, franchise-friendly model — a move some outlets describe as an attempt to “Sonic‑fy” the turtles. That strategy makes sense given Sonic’s box‑office track record, but longtime fans who cherish The Last Ronin’s darker, definitive storyline may be disappointed. Source on Sonic.

The Last Ronin was conceived as an R‑rated, five‑issue IDW adaptation that follows the lone surviving Turtle in a grim, future New York dominated by the Shredder’s grandson. The narrative pairs the last Turtle with an older April O’Neil and April’s daughter Casey Marie Jones — the daughter of Casey Jones — for one final attempt to reclaim the city.

The Last Ronin story has resonated strongly with readers — topping graphic‑novel sales charts for consecutive years. ICv2: 2023 sales and ICv2: 2024 sales.

Paramount’s apparent pivot favors a cinematic universe that can spawn sequels and spinoffs — a commercially driven choice enabled by the studio’s ownership of the property. That calculus helps explain why a standalone, adult‑oriented Last Ronin feature might not be the top priority right now.

Those shifts shouldn’t derail the ongoing animated line: the Mutant Mayhem sequel is reportedly still on course for a 2027 release, even as the TV spinoff Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was canceled earlier this month. Cancellation report.

After the strong reception for Mutant Mayhem in 2023, the franchise’s future felt uncertain — there’s more animation on the way, but details beyond that have been scarce. If Paramount hopes to blend live‑action and animation into a durable, wide‑appeal franchise, turning to producers who have navigated that balance successfully is an understandable route.

On the gaming front, there’s still no recent update on the announced The Last Ronin video‑game adaptation. The project was revealed with enthusiasm more than two years ago, but the intervening period has seen several smaller TMNT titles (Wrath of the Mutants, Splintered Fate, Mutants Unleashed, and Tactical Takedown) and appearances of the turtles as purchasable characters in big‑name games like Call of Duty and Fortnite. Fans are still waiting for a marquee, AAA‑quality Ninja Turtles game — and many had hoped The Last Ronin would fill that void. Ultimately, progress on any Last Ronin game will depend on Paramount following through, regardless of the film’s status. Background on the game announcement.
