No Country for Old Men Is Now Streaming for Free

A neo-Western takes the core themes and imagery of classic American Westerns and updates them for modern settings. Rather than following straightforward morality, stories in this subgenre lean into moral ambiguity, lawlessness, and violence. The style took root in the 1950s and 1960s as Hollywood moved away from the golden age of Old West stories. Films like Bad Day at Black Rock (1955) and Hud (1963) began exploring modern frontier tensions in contemporary landscapes.

The DC Universe has stepped into similar territory with HBO’s Lanterns. While DC comic book stories usually send Green Lanterns into space or drop them into major Justice League battles, the series puts Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and his trainee John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) in small-town Nebraska. While the show was still filming, director James Hawes directly compared the production to No Country for Old Men.

Released in 2007, No Country for Old Men was written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, adapted from the novel by Cormac McCarthy. The Coen brothers had already built an acclaimed filmography over two decades and won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Fargo in 1997. Their McCarthy adaptation marked a major triumph at the Oscars, earning them trophies for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The film follows a brutal chase across West Texas after a desert drug deal ends in a bloodbath. Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin), an impoverished welder and Vietnam veteran, discovers the carnage alongside a suitcase filled with cash. Moss takes the money, setting off a dangerous chain of events. A ruthless mercenary named Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) is hired by a crime syndicate to hunt down the stash, while aging sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) attempts to make sense of the escalating violence.

The role turned Javier Bardem into an international star and earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Anton Chigurh remains an unsettling presence on screen, defined by a distinct haircut, an emotionless demeanor, and sudden bursts of lethal force. Josh Brolin delivers a grounded performance as a regular man willing to risk everything for the money, helping launch him into major leading roles. Tommy Lee Jones grounds the story as an aging lawman who feels outmatched by the cruelty around him, offering a weary alternative to the typical heroic sheriff.

While Lanterns incorporates alien lore and power rings, pairing sci-fi elements with rural American settings borrows heavily from the mood of neo-Western thrillers. Anyone drawn to the rugged atmosphere of Lanterns can find the standard for the genre in No Country for Old Men.
