Blizzard Entertainment has announced its latest high-profile crossover, bringing the melancholic world of NieR: Automata to its flagship hero shooter, Overwatch. Starting Tuesday, March 10, the “Project YoRHa” collection will officially debut, transforming Kiriko into the iconic 2B, alongside Vendetta as A2 and Wuyang as 9S. This collaboration marks a significant intersection between Blizzard’s competitive arena and Square Enix’s beloved action-RPG.
The collection also introduces Legendary skins for Lifeweaver and Mercy, reimagining them as Adam and Commander White, respectively. While these hero selections align with the popularity of characters like Kiriko and Mercy, some fans have pointed out the missed potential for more mechanical pairings—specifically, a Pascal-inspired Bastion or an Emil-themed Wrecking Ball skin. Nevertheless, the attention to detail remains high; Kiriko and Wuyang will be accompanied by their faithful Pod 042 and Pod 153 companions.
The decision to lead with 2B is a calculated one, given the android’s status as a commercial powerhouse. Her crossover resume is extensive, with previous guest appearances spanning Soulcalibur VI, Final Fantasy XIV, Rainbow Six Siege, Stellar Blade, and even Fall Guys. Her arrival in Overwatch is yet another testament to the character’s enduring appeal across the gaming industry.

Beyond the cosmetic additions, the event will feature a custom-themed lobby designed by NieR: Automata artists Kimihiko Fujisaka and Koda Kazuma. Players can also explore a dedicated event hub to track progress through collaboration-specific challenges. Earnable rewards include unique name cards, a specialized player title, and a weapon charm modeled after the NieR aesthetic.
This partnership follows a growing trend of Overwatch integrating external franchises, such as Street Fighter 6, Persona 5, and various internal Blizzard properties like Diablo and Warcraft. More recently, the game has branched out into lifestyle and pop culture brands, including Hello Kitty and G.I. Joe.
Square Enix recently celebrated a milestone of 10 million copies sold for NieR: Automata, accompanied by an enigmatic tease that the series’ narrative is “to be continued.” Meanwhile, franchise creator Yoko Taro is currently spearheading a new Neon Genesis Evangelion anime project. This intertwined creative landscape has fans speculating about a future EVA crossover—and given Blizzard’s track record, a Rei Ayanami skin for Kiriko feels almost inevitable.
