If you’re drawn to stories that place young characters into wrenching, destabilizing trials, keep an eye on The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
Suzanne Collins ignited the YA dystopia boom with her bestselling trilogy in the 2010s. Though she long resisted writing a direct sequel, she did expand Panem’s world with a prequel that explores the origins of the Games. That prequel novel, Sunrise on the Reaping, has now been adapted for the screen.
A new trailer for the 2026 film has just arrived, offering a glimpse of events set a few years before the original trilogy. Despite the grim premise — children from Panem’s impoverished districts forced into a lethal contest — the footage is strikingly vivid. We’re shown a verdant field where a younger Haymitch and the other tributes form a ring; at the floral center, weapons dangle from an oddly ornate structure. The imagery calls to mind the pastoral horror of Ari Aster’s Midsommar while remaining distinctly its own.

The novel Sunrise on the Reaping deepens Haymitch’s backstory, revealing the losses and compromises that shaped him and explaining, in part, why Katniss’s rebellion later carried so much weight. The book also revisits other figures from the franchise’s larger tapestry, including Beetee, who plays a key role in Mockingjay.
