Modder Turns DOOM into Tactical Shooter with Crysis-Style Mechanics

Modder PkmX has showcased gameplay from an upcoming project that overhauls DOOM (1993) into a hardcore tactical shooter with reworked monster behavior and new mechanics.

According to the creator, combat is designed to be unforgiving because “players are fragile humans and die from a few bullet wounds.” The modder expects players to rely on cover and “apply proper room clearing techniques to maximize survival chances.”

In a project log for “Blackout: Hardcore Tactical Mod for Zandronum/UZDoom” on zDOOM, the developer detailed several core gameplay systems.

Players normally move at walking speed and slow down further when aiming down sights, carrying heavy weapons, or meeting specific conditions. Sprinting is available, but it drains stamina alongside firing weapons.

The mod also features a pain and stress mechanic. Taking damage raises stress levels, causing “heavy breathing, camera shake, and loss of peripheral vision.”

To offset the danger, players receive a Crysis-inspired nanosuit with multiple functions. These include an “adrenaline system” that triggers temporary speed boosts and damage resistance under severe damage or low health, along with a cloaking device that makes the player “nearly invisible.”
