Microsoft could release consoles running SteamOS, says former head of Xbox

Former Xbox executive and former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra publicly called on Valve to open up SteamOS so third-party companies can deploy it on a wide range of hardware.
Dear Valve Software — please allow third parties to use SteamOS and ship devices in a variety of configurations. SteamOS would take off, and your store’s revenues would grow.
He argued that the move could also be a lifeline for Xbox: rather than continuing to push Windows with “AI, Copilot, Teams, and the rest,” Microsoft could release consoles and devices running SteamOS and substantially strengthen its market position.
