Marathon isn’t Concord 3.0, but Sony’s game faces sales issues – journalist

Sony’s latest endeavor has enjoyed a respectable debut on Steam, yet emerging evidence suggests the launch may ultimately underwhelm the publisher’s broader expectations.

Over a week has passed since the extraction shooter’s arrival, yet Bungie and Sony have maintained a conspicuous silence regarding official sales figures. This lack of transparency suggests that Marathon likely has not yet surpassed the one-million-copy milestone across PC and console platforms combined.

Another strategic shift by Sony further hints at underlying complications. The company has reportedly scrapped its scheduled development panels for Bungie and Marathon at GDC 2026. No specific reason was provided for the cancellation of these talks, which were originally slated for March 13, 2026.

Forbes contributor Paul Tassi highlighted in a recent video that Steam accounts for the overwhelming majority of Marathon’s commercial activity. Citing sources within Sony, Tassi noted that performance on consoles is significantly weaker, posing a potential long-term dilemma for the publisher.

Despite these concerns, Marathon continues to hold its ground in the Steam Top 10, currently occupying the tenth spot. Player feedback has been largely positive, with Gamalytic estimating roughly 977,000 copies sold on Steam. While the title has successfully established a core community, it remains to be seen if PC success can compensate for sluggish console adoption.
