The Magic: The Gathering “Universes Beyond” initiative continues to expand with next month’s highly anticipated Marvel Super Heroes set. While the physical release promises a wealth of new products—including four dedicated Commander preconstructed decks—players have been eagerly waiting to see how these iconic characters would be integrated into the game’s digital ecosystem.
Longtime Magic: The Gathering Arena players likely recall the frustrating handling of the Marvel’s Spider-Man crossover. Due to unresolved licensing complications, that collection received a jarring aesthetic overhaul, forcing developers to rename cards and strip them of their thematic identity. The result was the obscure Through The Omenpaths set—a collection of arachnid-themed cards that felt tonally disconnected from the source material and ultimately deprived Arena users of the genuine Marvel experience.
Fortunately, Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that Marvel Super Heroes will arrive on Arena in its authentic form on June 23, with preorders opening June 2. In an official announcement, the publisher stated, “We’re thrilled to announce that Magic: The Gathering Marvel Super Heroes and all past and future Marvel sets will be coming to MTG Arena.”
The most welcome surprise is the retroactive restoration of the Spider-Man collection. Starting June 16, players will finally gain access to the original character names and artwork, effectively undoing the previous dilution of the set. Wizards notes that fans will experience the full breadth of the release, complete with all the cosmetic polish expected of a major Magic expansion.
This update encompasses the complete card roster, associated source material, themed avatars, and the distinct spiderweb-patterned basic lands. Furthermore, players will receive a one-time grant that updates their existing Through The Omenpaths cards to their proper Marvel iterations, allowing them to toggle between the different visual styles at their convenience.
For instance, those currently owning a Leyline Weaver can seamlessly swap it for the Spider Manifestation variant. While the underlying card mechanics remain identical, players now have the freedom to choose their preferred aesthetic. It is a remedial measure for a situation that arguably should have been avoided initially, yet it is a definitive win for the community.
