Magic Pro’s New TCG Makes Every Booster Pack Instantly Playable

When veteran Magic: The Gathering commentator and designer Brian David-Marshall debuted Cataclysm Arcade at last year’s PAX Unplugged, he framed the project as a departure from traditional trading card game (TCG) conventions. Set in a gritty, post-apocalyptic “retroverse” teeming with mutants, synthetics, and warring factions, the game is anchored by a provocative premise: What if you could enjoy a complete, competitive experience straight out of a single booster pack?

With the Cataclysm Arcade Kickstarter campaign slated for June 2, David-Marshall notes that extensive playtesting at local game stores has confirmed his original vision. The core appeal, he suggests, is the sudden realization players have when they discover they don’t need a pre-constructed deck to jump into the action.

Unlike legacy TCGs that demand weeks of study or heavy investment in starter sets, Cataclysm Arcade prioritizes “no-barrier-to-entry” play. The game is specifically engineered to let anyone crack open a pack and immediately dive into a balanced match, a simplicity that has proven infectious during live demonstrations.

Recounting a recent event in Dallas, David-Marshall described a newcomer who had never touched a TCG before. By the third turn of a four-player game, she had not only grasped the mechanics but was actively trash-talking opponents—and eventually secured the win.

For David-Marshall, the goal is to bridge the gap for those who frequent hobby stores but feel overwhelmed by decades of complex terminology and steep learning curves. While the game still fully supports traditional constructed, draft, and multiplayer formats, the primary intent is to ensure the first experience is welcoming rather than daunting.

The upcoming Kickstarter will feature various pledge levels, from individual packs to full cases, along with a range of accessories and cosmetic stretch goals like special foil treatments and variant artwork. Those who register for early bird access by June 1 will receive bonus sample packs shipping on the campaign’s opening day.

Beyond the tabletop, the project integrates a companion app that tracks both life totals and game data. Long-term plans include using tournament results to influence the game’s ongoing narrative. Players utilize a primary “Boss” card supported by secondary combat units called “Fighters.” David-Marshall envisions a system where high-performing Fighters might eventually be promoted to Boss status in future card sets, directly involving the community in the game’s evolution.

Characters like Bleargh, the Noxious Entity—a grotesque “filth monster” born from city waste—have already sparked a dedicated fan following, including a thriving community on the game’s official Discord.

The universe of Cataclysm Arcade will expand further through tie-in comics released alongside major sets. For David-Marshall, the end goal transcends the meta or secondary market value; it is about cultivating a social space. “I want to create something where people, 30 years from now, look back and say, ‘Remember the games we used to play together?'” he says.

The Founders Edition set, Crawling From the Wreckage, is scheduled for delivery in October, with a wider retail launch following in November. The studio aims to maintain momentum with a consistent release cadence of four sets annually.
