Avengers: Endgame Surpasses Avatar Again to Become Highest-Grossing Film in History
A theatrical re-release has brought in another $126 million for the Marvel movie, helping it reclaim the record after seven years.
Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed the title of the highest-grossing film in history thanks to the re-release of the “Avengers: Endgame – Bring Back” version. Over two weekends, the extended cut earned $126 million, bringing the movie’s total worldwide box office to $2.925 billion compared to $2.924 billion for James Cameron’s Avatar. The current difference is about $1.8 million, but the run continues, so the gap may still grow.

Avengers: Endgame first became the highest-grossing film in history in 2019 following its initial theatrical run. In 2021, Avatar reclaimed the lead thanks to a re-release in China, and later increased its box office after another theatrical run prior to the premiere of Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022. Now the rivalry between the two films can be called more “fair,” as both have received additional earnings from re-releases.
The next superhero team movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will be released on December 18, 2026.
