Everything Known About Potential Second Season of HBO Series Lanterns

The season finale of HBO’s Lanterns brought the story of Earth’s first Green Lantern, Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), and his replacement, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), to an emotionally cathartic conclusion. Now that the mysteries of Rushville, Nebraska, and Hal’s murder have been solved, and the story has been neatly concluded, it remains unclear whether the series needs to continue beyond its setup for a Stewart appearance in Man of Tomorrow. For viewers hoping to watch John grow into a superhero on his own terms, questions remain regarding whether more episodes of Lanterns are in development.

Is Lanterns season 2 confirmed?

No. HBO has not officially greenlit a second season of Lanterns despite its critical and commercial success. Lanterns racked up 6.6 million U.S. viewers in its first three days on HBO, nearly matching the 6.7 million viewers who watched A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms during its launch in January. The Game of Thrones spinoff received a renewal well ahead of its premiere. Lanterns pulled in an average of 12 million U.S. viewers per episode as its audience grew throughout the run.

Uncertainty surrounding the DC Universe due to the pending merger between Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Skydance likely contributes to the delay. James Gunn and Peter Safran stated they will continue to lead DC Studios following the merger, though several planned television series were scrapped in August after Supergirl underperformed at the box office.

Even so, series co-creator Damon Lindelof recently told Collider that some writers on the show are developing concepts for a second season. Lindelof will not participate in that writer room, which operates under co-creators Chris Mundy and Tom King. Lindelof previously mentioned that he always envisioned Lanterns spanning multiple seasons.

“We want the audience to be really hungry for more when it ends. I think that it feels like it was a really good meal, but a couple of hours after you’ve consumed it, you’re going to say, ‘I think I want to spend some more time in that world.’”

What is the plot of Lanterns season 2?

Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) is chained up in Lanterns

King discussed potential directions for Lanterns during a press conference held prior to the season finale. He explained that John’s custom version of the Green Lantern oath drew inspiration from Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern comic run, in which the former Green Lantern Sinestro establishes his own Yellow Lantern Corps powered by fear. Within Lanterns, Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) states that “fear can be the most powerful force in the universe.”

John leaves Sinestro on a planet where fear contaminates the local air and water, leaving Sinestro ample opportunity to study that power. Having already demonstrated the ability to forge a lantern independently, Sinestro could build a new ring and emerge once again as a formidable threat to the Guardians of the Universe and Earth’s new Green Lantern.

When will Lanterns season 2 be released?

A second season of Lanterns, if ordered, will not arrive on HBO for quite some time. Peacemaker, the first live-action DC series on HBO, debuted in January 2022. It secured a renewal one month later, but the second season did not premiere until August 2025. Applying that timeline to Lanterns suggests new episodes might not air until 2029.

Where will John Stewart appear next in the DCU?

Viewers will see John Stewart step into the role of Green Lantern much sooner than that. James Gunn’s upcoming DCU film, Man of Tomorrow, features John alongside Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), the Green Lantern chosen to replace Hal Jordan after John declined to work for the Guardians of the Universe. They will fight Brainiac alongside Superman, Supergirl, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl. The film opens in theaters on July 9, 2027.
